Dental Braces: Those Metals for the TeethEver seen teens or young kids with those "metallic" smiles? There are lots of them actually. Even some adults have these metallic objects stuck in their teeth. These are actually called braces or dental braces. What are these braces for? Why do people wear them?Braces are not mandatory. Dentists give their advice if having braces is the right solution to the problem. It is up to the patient to follow the advice given or not. However, if braces are not placed, the bad dental condition may lead to serious problems later on. It is important that as soon as a permanent tooth starts to grow, it should be regularly checked and monitored to ensure a good smile for the kid. A few permanent teeth can already give dentists hints if there is an impending dental problem. Some dentists choose to wait until all the permanent teeth have come out only to realize that early treatment could have made everything easier. In some extreme cases of dental problems, the desired results may not be achieved anymore once the face and jaws have completed its growth process. That is why, once dental problems are determined by the dentist, it is best to treat them immediately. Adults can also be treated provided that the bones and gums holding the teeth are still healthy. But how exactly do these braces help correct the dental problem? Dental braces have two main components: the brackets that are attached to the teeth and the main arch wire connecting the brackets. A bracket is a piece of shaped metal or ceramic that is glued to each tooth. The arch wire connecting these brackets is then bent to reflect the ideal shape. Pressure is applied as the wire threads try to return to its original shape. This pressure makes the teeth move into the desired place. Sometimes braces alone cannot apply the right amount of pressure. Thus, rubber bands are also attached to the braces to exert force and add more pressure to move the teeth in the right direction. These elastics should be worn everyday to have consistency in the pressure being applied to the teeth. Inconsistency will lead to a much longer time the brace needs to be worn. Monthly visit to the orthodontist is also necessary to make adjustments for a more efficient movement of the teeth and to monitor the improvement. A person who chooses to wear braces should be responsible enough as this dental appliance requires a lot of care and attention. Kids and teens who have them should also be properly supervised for a more effective and efficient treatment. |
