You can also arrange to have veneers put in if your teeth are chipped or jagged, or if you have had new teeth to grow in that have caused crowding.

And, if you don’t want to get braces, you can arrange to have veneers as an orthodontic procedure so that your teeth will naturally be straightened over time. But, before you make the appointment to have your veneers put in, there are a few things you should know.

Veneers are essentially shells for the teeth that are the same colors as naturally white teeth, and are placed over your teeth in order to improve your smile. The veneers should give your teeth a very straight and smooth finish.

Your veneers are prepared by your dentist, and they are based on the mold that is most recommended for your mouth shape and the size of your teeth.

While you may not think that you will ever want to take the veneers out, you should still be aware that, for the most part, the procedure can not be reversed. This is mainly because some enamel must be taken from your teeth in order for the shell the stay, and to make sure that the veneers fit the way they are supposed to.

It’s also a good idea to check with your health insurance provider to make sure that this process will at least be partially covered by the insurance company. Every insurance company may not honor the request, since this can be considered a cosmetic procedure and may not be considered ‘necessary’.

You should also find out how to care for your veneers after the procedure has been done. Your dentist may recommend that you stay away from foods and drinks that may stain your teeth, such as teeth, coffee, or wine, and you may want to avoid fruits that will stain the teeth, such as berries or certain rich sauces.

Remember to discuss every detail of the process with your dentist so that you know exactly what to expect after the process is over. In no time, you’ll be enjoying your beautiful smile-along with your friends and family.

Toothache is usually a sign of cavities, but this is not always the case. If you have sinusitis, an earache or ear infection, or even if you have an abscessed tooth, you can experience significant discomfort.

Credit: flickr

But the toothache is usually an indication that there is a bigger health problem, and if you heed the warning sign, you can avoid major complications in the future. Toothaches can also be indication that a person is going to have a heart attack, since pain or pressure in the jaw and limbs is quite common.

Since cavities are the main cause of toothaches, there are some things you can do before and in between your visits to the dentist to make sure that you don’t have to deal with toothaches on a regular basis.

For instance, eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a great way to keep your teeth healthy and to avoid cavities, since you will receive the natural sugars that your body is craving from consuming fruit. You should also be sure to eat foods that are rich in calcium, since this makes your teeth and bones stronger.

Making sure that your teeth are clean and free of bacteria is also a great way to avoid a toothache. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and to floss in between meals in order to keep plaque and bacteria off of your teeth.

You should also make sure that you visit the dentist regularly. Most people find any excuse in the book not to go to the dentists, but it’s best to schedule a dentist’s appointment at least every year in order to have your teeth cleaned and checked.

This way, you can be aware of any potential problems (i.e. the need for fillings, caps, or cavities) and can find out ways to have this problem remedied before you have to have your teeth pulled or go through any painful operations.

By taking good care of your dental health and making it a part of your daily life (including dental visits), you can forego the pain and discomfort of toothaches, and can have a healthy beautiful smile in the process.

You may also want to know how much pain you can expect to experience as a result of having the extraction, and your dentist will definitely be able to help answer your questions. But before you make your appointment, here are some things you should be aware of.

Credit: wikimedia.org

There are several reasons why you may choose to have an extraction, or the dentist recommends one for you. Many times, if you’ve had orthodontic services done in the past (i.e. braces, retainers) you may want to have a tooth extraction if certain teeth do not fit properly in your mouth as a result of the orthodontic treatments.

If this is the case, the tooth extraction will probably be considered cosmetic, so you’ll want to check with your health insurance provider before having the procedure done so that you will know how much you can expect to pay out of your pocket. People also choose to have tooth extractions when a tooth is decayed and can not be repaired or saved without molding or fillings. In many cases, a tooth extraction is the most affordable option.

Another reason why people have tooth extractions is to get rid of wisdom teeth. This is usually because the wisdom teeth are crowding the other teeth in the mouth, and people have been known to experience frequent toothaches, irritability in the gums, headaches, and even earaches as a result of wisdom teeth growing in.

Sometimes, when wisdom teeth grow in, other teeth become disproportionate to the rest of the teeth in the mouth, and these teeth have to be removed as well. If you decide that a tooth extraction is the best thing for you to do if you’re experiencing pain due to wisdom teeth, your dentist will inform you of proper oral hygiene after the procedure.

Once you make the appointment for your extraction, it is important to prepare your body to be able to handle the procedure. If you are taking any medications that thin the blood, such as aspirin, you should stop about three days before your extraction, and if you are on antibiotics, you may want to ask your doctor if you can stop taking them temporarily, since they can interfere with how well the anesthesia will work.

After your extraction, be sure to take it easy; solid foods are not allowed for at least 24 hours, and you shouldn’t spit, smoke, or drink with a straw for at least a day either.

It’s important to gently bite down on the gauze in your mouth in order to help form a clot, and refrain from vigorous activity and exercise for a while as well. This will help to you to recover sooner.

Every time one eats foods that contain sugars and starches like candies, cakes, cola, milk, and other carbohydrate rich foods, some traces are left on the teeth.

Credit: flickr

Certain bacteria, such as mutans streptococci and lactobacilli, thrive in dental plaque (or bacterial colonies) and utilize the sugars in the food traces as their own source of food. Digesting the sugars create acids as waste product. And these acids, especially lactic acid, eat up the mineral content of the tooth.

The acids produced in the digestion of sugar are either diluted, washed away in the mouth, or seep in the tooth’s surface. When dental plaque is present on the tooth’s surface, the acids penetrate it.

Since the plaque acts as covering or protective layer, the acids tend to stay longer on the tooth’s surface causing demineralization of the enamel and dentin.

The amount of demineralization also depends on the age of the plaque and the amount of acid. The older the plaque on the tooth, the more demineralization occurs. The rate of demineralization varies, thus, tooth cavity can take months or years to form. Cavity, or hole, is the physical manifestation of tooth decay.

Tooth decay starts from the tooth’s enamel and seeps its way into the dentin which is a softer tissue than the enamel. Once it reaches the dentin, it can now easily destroy the pulp where the cells, blood vessels, and nerves are contained. Once this happens, pain is now felt. Tooth ache will be felt until proper remedy is taken.

If tooth decay is not treated immediately, the affected tooth may die. Thus, it should be treated right away. Better yet, prevent tooth decay from occurring through proper dental care. As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure.”

Since the root cause of tooth decay lies on the type of food being taken, one may want to try limiting sugary food intake. Instead of sugar, artificial sweetener may be used instead. After eating sweet foods, or any food for that matter, it is advised to brush the teeth as soon as possible. If this is not possible, the mouth should be rinsed, at least, to remove traces of sugar from the teeth.

Brushing and flossing at least twice a day is recommended to prevent plaque buildup that traps the acids in the teeth. It is best to use fluoride toothpaste when brushing. Fluoride can have large effects in preventing tooth decay.

Fluoride helps in remineralization or the process of restoring lost minerals, makes teeth more decay resistant, and can slow down the bacteria’s ability to create acids that eats the teeth’s minerals. However, there should not be an overdose of fluoride as it also has some negative effects to one’s health. Brushing twice a day should be enough.

These preventive measures are relatively easy to do and these are actually part of one’s daily routine. Thus, it should not be difficult for anyone to prevent the tooth from decaying.

When you brush your teeth every day, make sure that you’re using toothpaste that contains a high amount of fluoride, so that your teeth and gums will remain healthy and free of infection. You should also make sure that your toothpaste contains baking soda.

Credit: flickr

Baking soda not only keeps the food in your fridge fresh; it does the same for your mouth. Baking soda, along with fluoride, can help your teeth to retain their whiteness and freshen your breath at the same time.

You should also make sure that you are eating healthily well before your teeth cleaning at the dentist. Eating lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits and grains increases your fiber intake, which means that your body is ridding itself of toxins, so your teeth will be stronger, and your breath will be more pleasant.

You should also make sure that your diet has plenty of calcium in it (which you can get from dairy products and leafy greens) in order to maintain the strength of your teeth.

When you’re getting your teeth cleaned, you shouldn’t experience any pain at all, but you may feel a little pressure while the dentist is removing food deposits and excess plaque from your teeth.

The dentist may also polish your teeth, and will take a close look at your gums to make sure your gums are healthy and that there is no bleeding, which could be a sign of bigger problems.

The only time your teeth cleaning will be extremely painful is if you are not cleaning your teeth properly at home, and the dentist has to use teeth cleaning material for a longer period of time or at a higher strength for your teeth cleaning.

If you are worried about feeling uncomfortable during your teeth cleaning, you can ask that your dentist use an anesthetic to numb your mouth during the process.

Once you leave the dentist’s office, be sure to continue caring for your teeth properly. You can use a mouthwash that is antibacterial to make sure that your gums are healthy and that mouth is clean, and remember to replace your toothbrush every couple of months in order to make sure you are cleaning your teeth effectively.

Babies at this age, around five to six months old, are undergoing the stage they call as teething. This is when the very first tooth of a baby erupts from the gums. Just try to imagine the lower front tooth trying to get its way out through the soft gum tissue. It must indeed be painful for a little baby to feel.

Credit: wikimedia.org

When a baby is in the teething stage, he drools a lot that it seems like water is left continuously dripping from a faucet. The baby also gets all fussy and crankier than he usually is. He cannot have a long, peaceful sleep anymore. No amount of nursing, rocking, swaying and bouncing can probably stop him from crying. He is in pain, that’s why.

A parent will know that his baby is teething when the baby’s gums are swollen, especially on the part where the tooth will erupt. The very first tooth that comes out is the lower, middle, front tooth. The bulging of the tooth can be felt when the swollen gum is touched. A teething baby also has the habit of biting everything he gets his hand onto. This is his way to somehow alleviate the pain he is feeling.

Teething is a natural occurrence for babies and cannot be avoided. But there are things that can be done to ease the pain felt by the little angel. Placing anything that is cold over the swollen gums can numb the gums. Frozen teething rings, ice, cold spoon, frozen washcloth and frozen banana are some of the cold options to sooth them.

Some medications are also available such as Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen. However, do not self-medicate. Have the baby take these medicines only when prescribed by the doctor.

Pediatricians may also prescribe teething gels to apply on the sore gums. This, though, should be the last option as it can easily spread throughout the mouth and numb the baby’s tongue and lips. The baby may also swallow too much of it.

Upon close observation, parents may also see a small cyst develop in the gums. But there is no need to worry as this watery sac will eventually be ruptured by the tooth as it pushes its way out through the gums.

Slight fever, diarrhea and rashes may also show when the baby is teething. Although this may seem to be normal to most teething babies, it is still best to visit the pediatrician for proper treatment.

Teething stage for babies is difficult. It is best to make sure that the babies feel comfortable all the time to lessen the pain of tooth eruption and have a good night’s sleep again.

But do not fret because you can still achieve those perfectly white teeth by just shelling out a few bucks. There are quite a number of teeth whitening products now available in drugstores or from your dentist’s office. These whitening products are easily available over the counter or may be prescribed by some dentists.

Credit: flickr

These whitening products also contain similar chemicals also contained in the whitening gels used by dentists in their teeth whitening procedure.

Only the concentrations differ. Dentists often use 15 to 20 percent of hydrogen peroxide gels for in-office treatment or 10 to 20 percent of carbamide peroxide for at-home procedures. Over-the-counter teeth whitening products typically contain 6 to 10 percent of these chemicals. However, there are some that contain much less.

There also toothpaste available in the market that contain whitening ingredients. However, these whitening toothpastes only prove to remove stains on the surface of the teeth. If the yellowness resides in the dentin inside the teeth, it may not be remedied by just using these whitening toothpastes.

Teeth whiteners are not considered drugs; thus, these products are not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. Instead, some teeth whitening products make sure that they have the “Seal of Acceptance” of the American Dental Association. Having this seal means that these teeth whitening products have met the standards set by the association in terms of safety and product effectiveness.

Since acquiring the ADA’s “Seal of Acceptance” is quite expensive and not really mandatory, there are manufacturers who do not bother to get their products acknowledged by the organization. But it doesn’t mean that these products are of less quality. In fact, there are some dentists who use or prescribe products that have not been granted the ADA seal.

However, it might prove to be better to go with products that have the ADA seal to ensure that the products are not harmful to your teeth and mouth tissues, and are indeed effective. Also, some products that do not have the seal may only contain traces of the whitening chemical and will not help in whitening your teeth at all.

Having your teeth whitened by a dentist is still your best bet. However, if there are budget constraints, teeth whiteners can also help in achieving your dream of a perfectly white teeth. Just make sure to read the literature carefully to ensure its effectiveness. And if possible, go with those products with that “Seal of Acceptance.”

Unfortunately, with the kind of food we eat and certain activities we do, we might find it difficult to keep our teeth white enough for a pretty smile.

Credit: flickr

People who drink coffee, tea, cola and those who smoke a lot get better chances in staining their teeth. Our teeth can also undergo discoloration with some medications. Genes can also be a cause of having those not-so-white teeth.

But the good thing is that there is already a solution to this problem. Dentists, especially cosmetic dentists, now perform teeth whitening procedures to grant their patients’ wish of having whiter teeth.

Teeth whitening, as the term implies, is a procedure done by dentists to whiten your stained teeth again. There are different processes or procedures that dentists can do in teeth whitening. Each has its own benefits and disadvantages. The dentists should recommend which procedure is the most appropriate for specific patients.

There are different procedures in doing teeth whitening that dentists can recommend their patients. These procedures are as follows:

Britesmile teeth whitening. This is a procedure done in the dentist’s office. It uses a special activating light and a whitening gel to activate the crystals and absorb the light’s energy then penetrate into the enamel for an increased lightening effect.

It only takes one visit to the dentist’s office for this treatment and this procedure usually costs about $600. A disadvantage, though, may be that the change in color is immediately noticed.

Laser bleaching. This procedure is very similar to the britesmile treatment. This is also an in-office procedure. The only difference is that this treatment uses laser instead of a special activating light. The change in color can also be seen right away, just after one visit to the dentist.

Custom fit tray bleaching. With this treatment, a custom fitted tray, made by the dentist, with little amount of bleaching gel is worn over the teeth for a specified amount of time everyday. This is the most common as it costs less than the other treatments aside from the fact that it can be done at home.

This procedure can be done together with laser bleaching when the patient has severe teeth discoloration or internal teeth staining. Some results may be noticed in a couple of days, but full whitening results may take one to two weeks. Also, this procedure requires regular visit to the dentist, about two to five times.

Having your teeth whitened can cost you from about $400 to $1000 depending on the procedure chosen. And the results can last from one to two or three years. With its great results, it surely is worth spending for.

Though the doctors or dentists cannot completely comprehend the cause of teeth grinding, these medical professionals suggest that the unusual alignment of the teeth may have some effect on the problem.

Most of the time, psychological factors cause teeth grinding in children or even adults. Anxiety, tension, stress, aggressiveness, suppressed anger or frustration, competitive or hyperactive personalities are some of the most observed factors in teeth grinding.

Teeth’s grinding in children is related to their growth and development. It is usually common in children when their upper and lower teeth do not fit together perfectly, or may be because of anger, tension, allergy problems, as a response from pain of ear or teeth.

Some children with cerebral palsy or serious mental abnormality also grind the teeth. In some instances, teeth grinding is not just because of dental or stress problem but because of some other disorder like Huntington’s disease or Parkinson’s disease, or a side effect of some psychiatric medicines.

Some other factors that increase the risk of teeth grinding are stress, age, nicotine, caffeine and other drugs. Teeth grinding goes off unnoticed and hence its signs and symptoms are not observed in common.

But if a person has worn teeth, pain in the jaw, ear ache, dull morning headache, chronic face pain or chewed tissue on the inside of the cheek, then seeing a dentist or doctor for medical treatment is advised.

Doctors or dentists can be aware about teeth grinding when questions are asked about the stress levels, dental care and health of the teeth, daily medications, eating and drinking habits or sleeping habits.

Examining the mouth, jaw, the tenderness of the jaw muscles, and dental abnormalities, the dentist or the doctor shall consider taking x-rays and making further study in the dental examination. Teeth grinding doesn’t usually cause any serious problems, but in some cases, teeth grinding may eventually cause damage of the teeth or the jaw, facial pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMJs) occurring in the temporomandibular joints just in front of the ears and can be felt when the mouth is opened or closed.

Therefore, it is best to avoid too much stress as much as possible to keep the teeth from grinding and avoid having chipped or crooked teeth.

Dentists can recommend different options for patients who want to have their teeth bleached. Depending on the patient’s availability and budget, dentists may recommend a chair-side bleaching or an at-home-tray bleaching.

Credit: flickr

However, before proceeding with the bleaching treatment, it is better to first understand the different shades of teeth and how many shades can your teeth lighten up. In other words, how white can your teeth become after the bleaching process.

Each person has a different tooth shade. Thus, the whiteness of another person’s teeth after bleaching may not be the same as yours even if the same exact bleaching process is done. Dentists should be able to clearly explain this before beginning the procedure.

Dentists do chair-side bleaching either by just using a highly concentrated bleaching agent, or a light or laser is also used together with the bleaching agent. Dentists clean the teeth first with a sandy material, pumice-like.

A peroxide-based gel is then applied on the teeth and a light may be used as well to help in the bleaching process. The whitening gels applied are work on its own but others get activated with the use of the light.

The laser or light does not have any whitening effect. They only activate the gel to initiate the chemical reaction that whitens the teeth. The whole procedure of bleaching and drying may take more than an hour and the results are seen immediately. If the desired whiteness is still not met, then patients are advised to come back for another teeth bleaching session.

If you do not have much time to sit in the dentist’s office for about two hours, you can opt for the at-home-tray bleaching methods. With this, the dentist will form a mouth tray or bleaching tray that fits your mouth and teeth well.

This tray holds the bleaching agent against the tooth. The mouth tray can be worn overnight or every hour or so depending on the concentration and the kind of bleaching gel used.

This method is more convenient and less expensive than the chair-side method. However, regular visit to the dentist is still required to monitor effectiveness of the equipments dispensed. Also, the desired result may be achieved with at-home-tray whiteners after several applications, not immediately.

Whether you go with the in-office chair-side bleaching or at-home-tray method, dentist supervised teeth bleaching is still recommended than just buying those over-the-counter whitening products. The chemicals contained in those products may not meet the actual requirements to produce the desired results.
