Tips for Much Healthier Teeth

Most people have experienced having toothache before, in one way or another. When one feels dental pain, most of the time, it stops the person from doing anything. It is difficult to work, study, or basically do anything when one has toothache. Unfortunately, it is only then that one realizes the importance of proper oral hygiene to prevent toothache and other oral ailments.

Proper dental care and overall oral hygiene is important. If the teeth are not given proper attention and care, oral diseases may occur and will result in loss of teeth. And it is better to learn proper care for the teeth as early as possible.

Thus, young kids should already be taught the routine of cleaning the teeth and doing it properly. As early as possible, kids should learn the importance of taking good care of the teeth.

Here are some tips to keep the teeth healthy and clean, and prevent oral diseases from occurring.

1. Teeth should be cleaned after every meal by brushing and flossing. Dentists recommend brushing the teeth at least twice a day and flossing every night.

2. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles so as not to hurt the gums too much. Replace toothbrush every three months.

3. Young children should be helped in brushing their teeth until they can properly do it on their own.

4. Visit the dentist regularly, at least twice a year. Professional cleaning is recommended at least twice a year so dentists can remove excessive plaque and tartar from the teeth. Dentists can also determine the condition of the teeth and diagnose of gum disease or tooth decay is already present.

5. Use fluoride toothpaste when brushing as it can help prevent tooth decay.

6. Allow 2-3 hours interval when eating meals or snacks to give the saliva time to wash out the acids produced after eating and to repair the enamel.

7. As much as possible, avoid too much sugar or sweet foods. If possible, use artificial sweetener instead of natural sugar. Sugar promotes tooth decay. Make sure to rinse the mouth or brush the teeth after eating sweet snacks such as chocolates and candies.

8. Sweetened cereals should always be eaten with milk. Eating it dry is not good for the teeth.

9. Chewable Vitamin C tablets are acidic and can be harmful to the teeth. Lemon juice should be used for whitening teeth as this will cause the teeth to lose calcium.

10. Babies should not be given bottled formula or juice in bed. Sugar traces from these drinks left in the mouth for long periods can cause babies' teeth to decay.

Taking good care of the teeth and mouth should not be too difficult a task. Adding these steps to one's daily routine and making it a habit to visit the dentist regularly will result in that winning smile and improved overall health.
