1. What are the different types of teeth?

There are two types of teeth: milk teeth (also called baby teeth) and permanent teeth. Milk teeth come out from 6 months until the 24th month of a child. A complete set of milk teeth consists of 20 teeth. All milk teeth are replaced by permanent teeth. The first permanent tooth most likely comes out on the child's 6th or 7th birthday, which when completed consists of 32 permanent teeth.

2. When should the child's first visit to the dentist be?

A child is advised to visit the dentist for the first time when he is between 2 to 3 years old. However, if an accident happens before he turns 2, then he should naturally be brought to the dentist for further examination. The dentist will examine the child's teeth and advise proper dental care.

3. What is considered a healthy tooth?

A healthy tooth is free from decay and cavities. It is clean, strong, has sound gums and solid bones.

4. How does a tooth decay? What causes it to happen?

There are times that tiny food particles are left on the teeth, especially those sweets with lots of sugar. When this happens, these food particles are turned into acid by bacteria. The acid penetrates the enamel, then slowly moving to the dentine and the pulp. Once it reaches the pulp, it becomes painful. And when the decay reaches the root, the tooth would need to be extracted.

5. How often should you visit the dentist?

It is recommended that you visit the dentist once every six months (twice a year). This ensures that the teeth are well-maintained and can do immediate actions should the dentist find plaque and tartar deposits on the teeth.

6. What happens when a permanent tooth is lost?

When a permanent tooth decays or gets damaged and needs to be extracted, it will not anymore grow again. Instead, an artificial tooth can be made to replace the missing tooth.

7. How often do we need to brush our teeth?

Ideally, our teeth should be brushed after every meal to remove food particle left-over to be stuck on our teeth. Brushing at least once a day is alright. It is best to use toothpaste with sufficient amount of fluoride as this helps in preventing tooth decay.

8. Can whitening toothpaste really whiten our teeth?

Whitening toothpaste can only remove stains and slight discoloration on the surface of the teeth. If the discoloration has penetrated into the enamel and into the dentine, whitening toothpaste will not make any major changes.

9. Is there a required diet to help maintain good dental health?

A balanced diet is all that is needed to maintain good dental health. Calcium and phosphorous are needed by the teeth but mostly only during formation stage. Once the teeth are fully formed, they cannot take any more calcium. Parents should also regulate the child's habit of eating sweet candies and chocolates.

Our teeth can be kept healthy as long as it is properly taken cared of. Make sure to eat a balanced diet. Brush your teeth after every meal. Use trusted dental aid for effective teeth cleaning. Do not eat too much sweets. Visit your dentist twice a year for proper cleaning and to check for impending cavities and tooth decay. The dentist can also suggest correct dental care.
